January was sound asleep, having the snooze of a sucked-off man. Hawk watched him for a few long minutes, then got his phone and started dealing with shit.

When are you coming home?

Momma’s worried about you.

Charlie’s doing a little better I think.

I swear to god, Bird. Make these assholes leave.

It’s not like you can survive out there, son. You need help. You need family. NY is HUGE.

Have you set up PT?

Jesus, go home. Momma and Daddy are climbing up our asses.

God, his head hurt.

He needed an apartment. Maybe in Nashville? Or maybe Dallas. No, not Dallas. Dallas wasn’t enough room from his folks. In Nashville folks knew him. Denver? It had an airport and he could have a place to ask January to come to and have a place to see.

Jesus.

He leaned forward, swallowing at the deep ache in his side. He’d overdone today, but January had taken time off work to see him. He wasn’t going to waste it.

Hell, for a second there, he’d thought— Shit, it didn’t matter what he thought. He was a moron.

He ignored Momma, Doc, and his brothers and sent Ben a yay and Charlie a, Buck up, cowboy.

Thinking about moving to Phoenix.

Phoenix? Things not working out with your Yankee?

He’s fab. Hawk was stupid in love. I need a place where he can come visit me too. Got a big airport.

It’s hot in Phoenix. Tell me about your week. How’s the shoulder? When are you riding again? I was out of it when you got hurt.

Hurts pretty bad. It’s cool here, but—I don’t know how to get a place. Mommas losing her mind man. Like seriously. Going to take one more week off for sure.

There was a pause before Charlie replied. Can you call me? Texting is kind of hard right now.

Yeah.

He crawled out of bed, grabbed a Coke, and curled up on the couch with a blanket. He was good at being quiet.

As soon as he dialed, Charlie answered. “Bird.”

“Hey, buddy. How you feeling?”

“Good. Better. Squinting at the damn phone gives me a headache.” Charlie’s voice sounded dry, rough. “So January is treating you well?”

“He’s amazing. He keeps talking about the next time I visit.” So he needed a place to go when he wasn’t visiting Charlie or here. “I stay in my bedroom, man. I sleep in the same bed I’ve had since I was a little boy. I need a place to go when I’m not a visitor.”

“Oh. You’re not invited to stay, huh? Well, y’all are new. He’s not ready yet. You could have him here if you want, you’re not a visitor here.”

“Yeah. Yeah, but you got people there. Tons. Has your mom fed you biscuits every morning?” He couldn’t pretend that he belonged there. His home was a ten by ten room that looked out over the pasture.

“Ben won’t tell her to go home. I need everybody to go away now. I’m better I swear. I need some peace.”

“You want I should call Ben in the morning?” He would, if only to hear what was really going on.
